Running and Walking
If you run, you are a runner. It doesn’t matter how far or how fast.
Running is something we should all be able to do. Some faster and further than others, but run all the same. So why don’t we? Reasons not to run generally revolve around it being hard, it hurts knees or it’s simply boring.
Being hard is usually simply a case of trying to run too far or too quickly without putting in the foundation work. Sore joints most likely boils down to poor a lack of mobility or weak muscles. And boring probably means you just haven’t found the right place to run yet.
I can help with all of those, but a great place to start is a Couch to 5k plan.
What is Couch to 5K (C25K)?
C25K is a program of running for absolute beginners. Over the course of 8-10 weeks, you will gradually build up to being able to run 5 kilometres. Each week, there are three runs with a rest day between each.
How does it work?
We are probably all guilty of jumping headlong into a new exercise regime only to overdo it and end up exhausted or broken. The inevitable giving up soon follows. C25K provides a gradual build-up with a mix of walking and running. The steady progression means the challenge is realistic and achievable and reduces the chances of injury.
Each week there is one group run giving you a chance to be encouraged by, and provide encouragement to other like-minded people. You’ll then have homework to complete in the form of two more runs. At the end of the course, we’ll arrange a graduation 5km run, possibly at a local parkrun. This will be your chance to enjoy the effort you’ve put in.
Who is it for?
Everyone. Literally everyone. If you’ve never run before, tried and found it too hard, or simply want to be a little more active, this is for you.
If you have any health concerns, you should consult your GP before undertaking any physical activity.
What are the benefits?
The benefits of running and exercise are numerous:

- Little equipment is needed although suitable running shoes is advisable
- Improve heart and lung function and help lose weight
- May increase bone density which in turn can help protect against osteoporosis
- Mental benefits. It can increase confidence and self-belief but proving you can achieve your goals
